Duolingo is currently a very popular languagelearning platform, having over 300 million users around the world. Their mission is to make learning a language free, have fun, and make it accessible. It’s made to feel like a game – which is scientifically proven to be very effective.

Benefits of Duolingo

Clarity – Duolingo is accessible and very easy to use
Uses visualisation to teach a language – making it easier for people to learn
Uses audio, so the learner can listen
Motivation – it is set up as a game, so you can continue to have fun whilst learning

Drawbacks of Duolingo

You have to learn topics in order, so you can’t access the topic you want to actually learn
No provided information of how the course works towards the beginning
Context – sometimes the sentence wouldn’t be useful in the real world

I would recommended to people who want to improve on their English and/or learn a new language – being beneficial for their future career. If you want to learn in depth, unfortunately Duolingo (and the other language learning apps) would provide the basic and intermediate skills – so real-life communication would be useful, as you are going to further practice and improve on a language.
