Once you’ve got to grips with the basics with Google Classroom and Hangouts, you may start to notice some tools are not working as well as you would like or there may be activities you would like to try but are not sure how.
Keep your questions coming to the Digital Learning team. If we can’t answer your question immediately, we will research it and get back to you. Also we will keep a log of frequently asked questions, so please keep us updated on issues or queries you have even if you resolve them independently as we can share these widely so other teachers can benefit.
Here are some of the questions we have had so far:
How can you see who is present in your Google Class at a specific time?
At the start of your lesson, post a simple icebreaker “question” for students to respond to. This can be in short answer or MCQ format. You can then view which students have “turned in” a response.
How can you schedule a quiz assignment, an assignment, a question or material for a class at a specific time?
When you create the learning activity or material, choose “Schedule” rather than posting immediately to choose a date and time for the item to appear to your students.
How can you create material, an assignment or a quiz assignment for more than one class in Google Classroom?
When you create the learning activity or material, select which class(es) it is for: you can choose the current class and any other classes you are teaching.
How can you create material, an assignment or a quiz assignment for specific students in Google Classroom?
When you create the activity or material, ensure just the current class is selected and then you can choose which students you wish to view it.
How can you copy material into another class you teach?
Sometimes you might want to copy material or an activity you have already created into another class. It is very easy to do this.
- Create the item in one classroom.
- Go to another classroom that you would like to post the same item in and navigate to the classwork tab.
- Click the “create” button and select “reuse post”.
- In the “reuse post” tool, find the classroom you posted to originally and locate the item you wish to post to the new classroom. Click “reuse”.
How can I see the names of individual students who have submitted a quiz assignment?
You can only view individual responses to a Google quiz by their email address not by their display name. The only way you can overcome this is by making the first question a short answer/text box (ungraded) where students type in their name.
If you view the quiz assignment you have set from within Google Classroom after you have set it, you have the option to import grades and then the quiz results will be associated with student names in the grade book. Note: if you have already imported the grades into the grade book, you will need to go into your Google Drive to see individual responses to a Google quiz.
Can you track how long a student has spent on a quiz assignment?
Not at the moment but we will look into add-ons for Google Forms asap!
Why are student email addresses displaying instead of student names in Hangout Meets?
A Hangout Meet will only display email addresses if you have to add students individually after starting a hangout. If you send students a link to invite them into a meeting it shows their first name and surname. TIP: You can do this in advance by scheduling a hangout in your class calendar.
How do you create a traditional threaded forum in Google Classroom?
Use the question tool for this and choose “short answer” then allow students to reply to each other. Note this only allows discussions in text format.
If you have any other questions, please contact the Digital Learning team. If we can’t answer your question immediately, we will research it and get back to you.
Again please keep us updated on issues or queries you have even if you resolve them independently as we can share these more widely so other teachers can benefit.
